A message from our Volunteers’ Rep.

Hello listeners, volunteers, supporters and friends of Radio 1RPH.  It is my absolute pleasure to introduce our October 2017 newsletter on behalf of President Lorraine Litster.
Throughout the following pages you’ll find plenty of evidence that your station and volunteers have been as busy as

ever. Much of the ‘behind the scenes’ work has revolved around policy development, preparing for grant applications, planning the AGM and much more occupying the Committee’s time.
Did you know that it’s only 76 days until Christmas? Probably even less when you’re reading this! The programming team are in the midst of planning our Christmas Day broadcast, so now would be the time to drop Jenni Rush a line if you’d like to submit some content for the day.
As always, the lead up to Christmas is a busy time for everyone, so jot these dates down in your diaries: October 19th for Tempo Theatre’s production of Table Manners and November 18th for the Annual General Meeting. See the articles in this newsletter for more information.
The past few months have seen quite a few new faces join the growing volunteers’ ranks. Volunteers are our lifeblood – we could not operate without the incredible support afforded by each and every one of our contributors.  If you’ve recently joined 1RPH as a volunteer or supporter – thank you very much indeed, and may your time spent with us be fulfilling and enjoyable.

Nev. Blyth

Volunteers’ Representative

Tempo Theatre is proud to bring you their latest big production: Table Manners.

Tempo Theatre is generously donating the Box Office takings for the Preview Night of Table Manners, to Radio 1RPH.

See it on Thursday 19th October, 7.30pm.
Tickets on sale now!

Table Manners is the first play in Ayckbourn’s hilarious English comedy trilogy known as The Norman Conquests.

The story centres on Norman and his very dysfunctional family. Ayckbourn’s witty dialogue and fast paced interrelationships comments keeps this play romping along to the extent you will never guess the ending.

Tempo is excited to bring this production to the stage and has put together an amazing combination of experienced performers, including Radio 1RPH’s very own Nikki-Lynne Hunter, and some wonderful fresh new talent. Together they give this show a high standard full of believable characters that you just can’t help but feel for!

So get your bookings in now and take your family and friends along to see this rib tickling theatrical presentation. Make it a night out with friends or neighbours.

Venue:  Belconnen Theatre (Theatre@BCS), Swanson St, Belconnen.
Performance:  October 19 at 7.30pm.
Cost:  $30.00.
Bookings:  Call Jenni Rush on 6241 4076 or purchase tickets at the Box Office on the night.

Meet volunteer Reader Nikki-Lynne Hunter.

I guess you reach a stage in your life when you want to give something back to the community. I thought about what skills I had that I could put to good use.
I work all day on foreign policy for a European Embassy and in the evenings I tread the boards for any amateur drama company that will have me. So reading the news on Radio 1RPH seemed like a good fit.
I read in Studio One on a Thursday morning and Studio Two on Friday mornings. I love the camaraderie with my co-readers, the silent laughter behind the mikes and the chance to complete the Canberra Times cryptic crossword before I get to work!
As I work with foreign policy issues all day and as I am half French, those tricky names are not so hard for me.
When I am not at Radio 1RPH or on stage I am out walking my Staghound and my Ridgeback or kicking back with my two gorgeous daughters.

Nikki-Lynne

Christmas Day Special Program – volunteers needed.
Each Christmas Day we produce a special program of pre-recorded shows. This includes some traditional Christmas stories, a few programs from local churches and some entertaining programs like the Christmas play produced by Tempo Theatre, with some of our readers featuring.

We need around 12 hours of content, so we are looking for volunteers to produce a program.
You don’t have to have a Christmas themed program, we look for a good balance between Christmas and just general entertainment.
If you are keen to participate, you can either put your name on the sign-up sheet on the noticeboard or let me know!

Make a difference and have a say!

Spring is well and truly in the air with growth and renewal in abundance. It’s also time for the Radio 1RPH AGM when all of the Board positions will become vacant and a new Board will be elected.
If you are a financial member this is your opportunity to have your say on how the Station is run and by whom.  AGM papers will be sent out on 20 October.
If you’d like to be on the Board no previous experience is necessary, but availability, enthusiasm, energy, ideas and a willingness to embrace change all count.
Nominations will open shortly for the Board positions of: President; Vice-President; Vice-President (Print Handicapped); Secretary; Volunteers’ Representative; and two ordinary Committee Members.

If you are a financial member of Radio 1RPH you can be nominated for any of these positions. The Nomination for Committee form can be obtained from Jenni Rush.

You need to be proposed by a financial member and seconded by another financial member, and then the form needs to be signed by you accepting the nomination.

It is essential that if you would like to be nominated for the Committee or are proposing or seconding a nomination, you check with Jenni Rush that you are a current financial member.
For information on any aspect of nominations or the AGM call Jenni Rush on 6241 4076.

Tech talk.

We have two stories from Nev Blyth in Tech Talk this month: one an update on Toni’s List and the other a dizzying tale of expertise…

Toni’s List rostering system.

Recently we opened up our testing version of Toni’s List—our new rostering system for live readers and presenters.
Thanks for all the helpful suggestions, thoughts and feedback sent so far—the system has been fairly well customised for Radio 1RPH, so a few bugs and glitches are to be expected.
If you are involved in reading or presenting for our live programs and would like to have a look at the system, please log in at: http://tonislist.com.au/login, using your email address or phone number (if provided). There are also iOS and Android apps available for your phone. From there you can check your shifts, request day/s off, or pick up shifts.
At the moment, the system is being run in parallel with Christine’s traditional roster. If you do notice a discrepancy between the two, do let me know. I’d like to bring this system forward to a point where users feel comfortable in managing their duties on-line. As always, if you have any questions, please call me on 0407 199 166 or drop me a line at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Antenna Antics!

Last month, 1RPH commissioned its most recent periodic inspection of our two guyed antenna masts in the back paddock. These masts are each 53 metres tall and act as the active radiating elements for our transmission—spreading our 2,000 watts of AM signal out to our listeners.
It goes without saying that these masts are absolutely critical to our operation and must be well maintained. Accordingly, two intrepid technicians from Sight and Sound Installations Pty Ltd went over our installation with a fine-toothed comb; giving it a clean bill of health we’re pleased to say, and good for another four years.
Can you see the little black dot near the top of the antenna? That’s the technician. Glad it’s not me!
